Lancelin is Australia’s premier sandboarding destination, conveniently located just 85 minutes from the Perth CBD. Sandboarding here is both affordable and enjoyable, with sandboard rentals starting at just $10.

STEP 1: GETTING TO LANCELIN

To reach Lancelin, drive north from Perth along the Mitchell Freeway. Turn right onto Romeo Road and then left onto Wanneroo Road, which becomes Indian Ocean Drive a short while later. Follow this road until you see the well-signposted turn-off for Lancelin. Head towards the coast and you’ll soon arrive at the dunes.

To make the most of the dunes, you’ll need a sandboard – other types of boards are not suitable for sliding on sand and will not have the same effect. Sandboards can be reserved online starting at $10. You’ll collect your board from the dunes where standard two-wheel-drive vehicles can park at the base on hard rock.

It’s crucial to stay on designated routes; deviating may result in getting bogged down in soft sand. Note that most rental car companies do not permit taking their two-wheel-drive vehicles off-road.

Lancelin Park Here for Sandboarding

For deeper exploration into off-road areas, a four-wheel-drive vehicle is required due to potential hazards such as dangerous dunes where accidents can occur.

The dune area spans across three different jurisdictions; only use licensed sections marked by signage at entry points indicating permissible areas for activities.

If unsure about driving off-road with a two-wheel-drive vehicle, park it on Bootoo Street or in a nearby clearing and walk approximately 300 meters across soft sand and hard rock to reach the dunes.

FREE DUNES ENTRY

Entry to these expansive dunes is free – there are no gate restrictions and they dunes are open daily from 8am to 7pm, year-round.

Rental boards are available from 10am daily. Those experienced with skateboards or snowboards may stand while descending hills whereas sitting down requires no skill but offers equal enjoyment.

WHAT SHOULD YOU WEAR?

It’s important to dress according to weather conditions. If it’s windy or if you think you may fall frequently, you should be prepared for sandy clothes.

Sunglasses are recommended for protection against both the glare from white sands and blowing particles.

Remember, climbing up each dune provides excellent exercise opportunities! Be prepared to work up a sweat.

FACILITIES

Note: there are no facilities such as toilets or shops within proximity of the dunes, so plan accordingly before arriving.
