Lancelin is a popular surfing destination just 90 minutes from Perth and for those who don’t own a board, you can rent one in town. While the bay is protected by a reef about a kilometre offshore, to the south is Lancelin’s Back Beach, a popular spot with surfers of all ages and abilities.
If you have a 4WD you’ll be able to access the beach easily. Simply take the track to the left of the car park in the picture below. You access the Back Beach car park from Casserley Way.
Parking on the beach means your partner/friends/family can watch you surf from the comfort of their car and out of the wind if it’s blowing.
If you only have a 2WD, park in the car park and it’s just a short walk over the dunes to the beach. There are some good surf spots north of Lancelin, however, you’ll definitely need a 4WD and some local knowledge to access those.
Stand-up paddleboards (SUPS) are great in the surf if you know what you’re doing. For novices though, you’ll almost certainly want to start in the calmer waters of the bay to get your confidence up. It’s not difficult, in fact most people are up and paddling within minutes.
The best time to surf Lancelin’s coast is in the morning when the wind is typically at its lightest. Of course, if you’re making the journey from Perth or points north and are expecting to hire a board here, you’ll want to reserve it on-line before you arrive to avoid disappointment.
Renting a quality surfboard or stand up paddleboard (SUP) in Lancelin is easy and inexpensive (from just $5/hour for a surfboard on a full day rental). Once you’ve booked on-line, you will receive a receipt via email which will contain the details of where to collect your board/s. Simply hand over your on-line email receipt along with your $50/board deposit and within minutes you’ll be on your way to a great day in the water. Afterwards, return your board, collect your deposit and head home with some great memories.
Is there anyone in Lancelin that teaches surfing.
